It is ordinary to lose anywhere from 1/8-1/4" per day during the peak of the summer due to evaporation. If you are experiencing any more than that, you most likely have a leak.
Pools begin to leak for many reasons over time. The most common cause of a leak in a vinyl liner pool is the liner itself. Diagnosis of these leaks typically involves a lot of guesswork and return visits. Barnegat Bay Pool and Spa has invested in the necessary technology to perform fool-proof digital leak scans to pinpoint holes as small as the head of a pin that are invisible to the naked eye. This is a very specialized service that not many companies offer.
If the pool is concrete or fiberglass, there could be a crack. These leaks are located by sending our in-house scuba diver into the pool with dye to inspect every square inch of the pool and all underwater features up close. We locate and repair all leaks found at the time of the dive.
The pool plumbing can become damaged for many reasons. You can have a line burst due to improper or failed winterization. A line can also collapse due to water chemistry or a foreign object applying pressure. Older pools were plumbed with black poly pipe which becomes brittle over time and can split on its own under pressure. We can detect lumbing leaks using pressure testing and underground listening equipment (geophones) to pinpoint the exact location of the issue.
*If you are unsure of whether water loss is evaporation or not, try the bucket test. Place a bucket on the top step of the pool, fill the bucket with water, mark the water level inside the bucket. Mark the water level of the pool on the outside of the bucket. Let sit for 24 hours, then compare. If you have lost more water in the pool than the bucket, you can narrow down the source of a leak by simply comparing water loss in your pool with the filter running for 24 hours vs. the filter being off for 24 hours. If you are losing suction (prime) at the pump, it is likely that you have a leak on the suction end of the system. These simple observations can greatly reduce the amount of time and money required to locate a leak.
We also offer hot tub leak repair services. If you notice water loss in your spa or see puddling around the base of your hot tub, we repair all major brands.
If you would like us to contact you to discuss pricing or a plan of action regarding a suspected leak, give us a call (609) 489-6484 and include as many details as possible.
